Sula: Brazilian, holds a B.A. in English and Portuguese from the Catholic University
of Salvador, Brazil (UCS) and a post-graduate degree in Conference Interpreting from the Pontifical Catholic University of
Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio). Lived and studied Spanish in Bolivia for 2 years, with extended stays in Panama. Has been active
as a professional translator and interpreter for more than 15 years in Brazil and the U.S. Founding member of SINTRA (Brazilian
Syndicate of Translators), Certified translator by the American Translators Association (ATA), and full member of The American
Association of Language Specialists (TAALS) and of L’Association Internationale d’Interprètes de Conférence (AIIC).
John: American, holding a B.A. in Spanish and English from Brigham Young
University, and Master’s and Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literatures (Portuguese and Spanish linguistics, Brazilian
and Portuguese language and culture) from Harvard University. Served in the Peace Corps in Brazil and has resided in Colombia.
Full Professor of Modern Languages at Florida International University, where he teaches Spanish, Portuguese, linguistics,
and interpretation. Also teaches courses in community interpreting throughout the State of Florida. Has worked as a professional
translator since 1968 and as a conference interpreter since 1980. Certified translator by the American Translators Association
(ATA). Accomplished audio and video technician. Author and translator of books and author of many articles, including some
on translation and interpretation, as well as others on linguistics and pedagogy.
